End-to-End QoS: Challenges and Practical Solutions

Overview The deployment of IP QoS promises to radically alter IP networking, both in terms of the types of application traffic that IP networks can carry and the types of services that carriers can offer. It promises to make IP a truly universal network protocol — universal not only in terms of geographical deployment but in service capabilities — as IP moves beyond data transport and into areas once firmly the preserve of telecommunications technology.

For service providers, IP QoS can be a means to increase revenue and improve customer retention. QoS capabilities are key to (1) controlling service levels, and (2) value-added services, including IP “replacement” of specialized voice or private data networking equipment.
