Making the Most of Legacy Mobiles: Examining the Relationship Between Technology Choices and Location Revenues
Overview
With continuing uncertainty over the launch schedules of 3G networks, most cellular operators are looking with renewed interest at how to maximize revenues from the 2G and 2.5G customers they already have.
Operators face a wide choice of location technologies. Each differs in its performance and ability to support legacy terminals (i.e. 2G or 2.5G terminals with no modifications). Clearly, there is a trade-off between performance, ability to support legacy mobiles and the commercial location revenues that might be available to an operator over time. In this paper, BWCS explores the trade-off scenarios in some detail and analyse the likely outcomes arising from different technology decisions through the eyes of a hypothetical cellular operator.
