Advances in Graphics Architectures
Overview
Over the past decade, the general computing power of central processing units(CPUs) has increased dramatically.
However, another component of the
PC architecture—the graphics processing
unit (GPU)—has advanced at an even more astounding pace. Today's GPUs can easily deliver more than 25 times the performance of a 3D graphics workstation of 10 years ago at
less than 5 percent of the cost.
As recently as 6 years ago, most consumer 3D graphics operations were principally calculated on the CPU, and the graphics card simply displayed the results as a dumb frame buffer. Today, essentially all graphics functions can be offloaded to the GPU, thus allowing the CPU to do even more
calculations in order to achieve an immersive, real-time, graphics environment.
