In-Band versus Out-of-Band: Virtualization Offload Options

Overview Virtualization has garnered a lot of attention in the last few years in part because it promises to make networked storage more affordable and easy to manage by making the location and any other physical characteristics of stored data more or less irrelevant to the application and individual human user. As long as it's somewhere on a device attached to the storage networking system, vitualized data can be addressed and utilized. However, one issue facing virtualization is the likelihood that it will put a strain on existing servers. This concern has led to two schemes for "offloading" some of the work associated with virtualization -- In-band (in the data path) and out-of-band (out of the data path) management. This paper examines both in- and out- of band technologies as well as current offerings available from the major vendors.
