Hewlett-Packard (HP) has bought Transoft Networks - a specialist in Fibre Channel-compatible Storage Area Networking (SAN) equipment. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but HP said Transoft's technology will give its existing SAN...
SANs provide high-speed access to distributed storage via Fibre Channel (FC) technology. Data General's (DG) Clariion storage division has this week bet on becoming one of the main providers of Storage Area Networks (SANs), gambling against huge...
The FibreAlliance promotes open Fibre Channel management standards. SANs provide high-speed access to distributed storage via fibre channel (FC) technology. The burgeoning market for Storage Area Networks (SAN) is being in killed at birth because...
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), the Fibre Channel Association and the FibreAlliance are all involved in the search for common ground. More on this can be seen in this week's News in View programme (http://www.silicon.com/a37028 )
Traditionally, SANs are based on the Fibre Channel standard, however, using IP, as pioneered by Nishan - recently acquired by McData - and others such as Cisco, can stretch their usefulness beyond the traditional 10km.
But McData has since faced increasing challenges because the Fibre Channel standard on which it relies for data transfer in storage area networks is seeing steep competition from iSCSI, an IP-based standard for linking data storage devices.
