The Use of Response Surface Methods for the Analysis of System Architectures

Overview This paper illustrates the use of RSM in evaluating proposed system architectures during the preliminary phases of the design of a new system. The example system presented is a Client/Server hardware configuration with a layered software architecture. A model of the system was constructed using SES/Client-Server Composer. An experiment was designed to assess the effects on performance by varying the numbers of clients, varying processor speeds, and varying the allocation of software layers to hardware components. A simulation was executed to estimate the system response time for a specific workload under each combination of factor settings. A response surface was fitted to the results of the simulation and, subsequently, explored graphically to determine the optimal software allocation for a given hardware configuration and workload.
