Just Say No: Customers Ditch Traditional Software for Web Services
Overview
Internet business service providers (IBSPs) develop their software as hosted, Web-delivered services from the ground up. Most began as startups, competing against both established independent software vendors (ISVs) that sell licensed software for in-house deployment and “traditional” application service providers (ASPs) that deliver ISV software in a hosted, subscription model.
When we began tracking IBSPs in 1999, they represented a revolutionary way of developing and delivering line-of-business solutions to customers.
Shunning the notion of delivering retrofi tted packaged software over the
Internet, IBSPs set out to create a new generation of solutions designed
expressly as Internet-hosted services.
