Personal Authentication and the PKI Security Process – Benefits of the iKey

Overview Swipe cards, such as credit cards and cards used in automated teller machines (ATMs), contain user information that the authentication program can read to establish the user’s identity. When combined with a password or personal identification number (PIN), they provide simple two-factor authentication. The two factors are possession of the card and knowledge of the password or PIN. The theory is that only the true, identified user would both have the card and know the password.Smart cards add a small processor to the swipe card. This processor can perform certain limited computations with data provided by the authentication program in conjunction with data stored on the card. Encryption of user data and passwords is a common activity of these chips. Like swipe cards, smart cards provide two-factor authentication, albeit at a much more secure level.
