Deploying HSMs into an OpenSSL-Based PKI Environment

Overview OpenSSL manages all key objects, both private/public key pairs and symmetric keys, as a set of attributes. These attributes include: key size, value of the key, number of references to a key, and possibly some others. It also includes a list of available mechanisms for operating on the key. There are several methodologies available to making openSSL aware of externally stored key objects, as would be needed with the use of an HSM. The following will describe the methodology Rainbow Technologies chose to manage RSA private key objects, as well as suggestions as to how to improve upon this method.
