Object-Oriented White Papers

Managing C++ APIs

Overview This paper summarizes Symbian’s central insights into OO system design gained while developing Symbian OS.Its two main aims are to show how C++ language constructs are used to implement object oriented designs and deliver object oriented APIs; and to show how DLLs are used to implement high-level components, which are essential for practical work with large systems. It is assumed that the reader is broadly familiar with object oriented concepts and with C++. However, we begin with a brief review of object oriented design, to provide some context. The paper also compares Symbian OS API disciplines with those of Java.
