Symbian OS for Palm OS Developers
Overview
This paper describes Symbian OS to Palm OS developers. It looks at the similarities between Palm OS and Symbian OS, and describes the architecture of Symbian OS in more detail.
The Palm operating system has been the foundation of Palm’s unrivaled success as the world’s best-selling handheld computer brand. Palm OS was originally exclusive to Palm handhelds, but is now licensed to several consumer electronics manufacturers around the world. It is tailored to the requirements of basic handheld computing: from the beginning Palm says its developers ‘set out to create a compelling, low-cost, small form-factor, handheld computer’. Simple software supported by an intuitive interface has ensured mass consumer appeal, and with its straightforward programming paradigms, a community of around 130,000 develops applications for the platform today. Now, the introduction of wireless technologies introduces new challenges, both for developers and the operating systems they develop for.
