Privacy Issues White Papers

Privacy, Security, Personal Health Records and the Enterprise

Overview The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 is federal legislation that is little known and even less understood outside the health care industry. And yet HIPAA has the potential to impact every business in the United States.

The legislation's original provisions focused on protecting the privacy and security of personal health records (PHR) and have been of great concern to CIOs in the health care industry. However, the provisions should also be of concern to non-health care organizations that maintain personal health records of their employees.
