Component-Based White Papers

Testing Commercial-off-the-Shelf Software Components With Software Wrappers

Overview COTS components are pieces of software that ideally can be integrated into a system with far less effort and cost than would be necessary to build a custom component and integrate it into the system in question. Unfortunately, the very points that make COTS components so attractive result in some major difficulties with their usage. The buyer of the COTS component is dependent upon the vendor for a specification of the component’s behavior and its intended usage. Miscommunication between the buyer and vendor could result in misuse of the component, which could clearly compromise system integrity. Further, source code is typically not provided when system developers purchase a COTS component. This adds to the difficulty of understanding the COTS component’s behavior and testing the component within the system into which it has been integrated.
