PKI and the Protection of Data and Privacy

Overview The success of the emerging digital economy and the protection of privacy and data in the Information Age will depend heavily on new technologies such as privacy-enhancing digital signatures based on a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

Here, the use of digital certificates in PKI-based applications offers a high level of authentication, confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation for communication in electronic environments. This system of policies, technologies, and procedures makes it possible to offer strong security and authentication for handheld wireless devices (such as mobile phones).

Privacy-enhancing technologies can also be used to ensure that the certificate user remains anonymous and that the certificates cannot be traced or linked in order to gather information on the user’s behavior. This paper briefly examines these aspects of privacy and data protection in the global digital economy.
