Synchronous Optical Networking: SONET
Overview
SONET is a transport technology, designed to provide users a network infrastructure with survivability characteristics, so that business operations continue uninterrupted. SONETÂ’s self-healing fiber optic ring functionality enables automatic network recovery due to failures that can be caused by a fiber optic cable cut, lost signal, degraded signal or node/system failure. SONET is also a technology that is designed to ensure that network traffic is restored within 60 milliseconds in the event of a failure.
SONET is the North American standard for telecommunications transmission using fiber-optic cables. SONET provides a set of protocols for the management and control of high bandwidth optical networking transmission. The SONET standard includes definitions for a multiplexing structure, optical parameters, service mappings, and network management support for existing and future services. SONET uses standardized interfaces, which allows multi-vendor interconnection of terminal equipment and subsystems.
