ATM/MPLS Interworking Transition Strategy: Bringing MPLS to the Layer 2 Core

Overview The majority of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology development to date has been focused specifically on IP features and functionality. ATM-based carriers have very different needs when it comes to MPLS. ATM-based carriers must simplify network operations, reduce the cost of backbone ownership and operations and accommodate increasing IP traffic growth. This white paper will examine the factors that are driving Layer 2 service providers to MPLS, along with the obstacles and technology limitations that have thus far prevented such a network migration. Additionally, it will outline a new vision for a converged ATM/MPLS core - one that allows carriers to reap the benefits of MPLS in existing Layer 2 networks in a way that optimizes capital expenditure and protects the existing customer base.
