Problems, Advantages and Disadvantages of Malware Testing
Overview
Computer viruses are only part of the threat which malicious software (malware) causes. In addition to viruses, Trojan horses, sniffers, hacking programs and even joke programs cause a threat to computer users. One way to approach malware prevention is to use computer antivirus products for preventing damage caused by
malware programs. If computer antivirus products are used against malware, computer users need to know how well antivirus products can prevent the threat of malware. Therefore malware testing is needed. However, the advantages and disadvantages of malware testing are not self-evident. There are arguments for justifying malware testing, but also arguments against malware testing. In addition, malware testing causes additional problems for computer antivirus product evaluation methods. In this paper we shall discuss in detail what the problems of malware testing are, how malware testing could be carried out and what the advantages and disadvantages of malware testing are. We shall also present the
results of a survey on computer antivirus professionals’ views of issues related to
malware testing.
