Review and Outlook of the Detection of Viruses using Intrusion Detection Systems
Overview
In the very first years of the computer virus problem, many different
approaches were tried in the hope of finding the silver bullet. Eventually, the virus scanner emerged as technology of choice. It can hardly be called a
silver bullet, given its frequent update cycle, but has served us all very
well for more than ten years.
In this paper I will review research into an alternative to virus scanners:
the application of intrusion detection technology to computer viruses. I
will discuss the experiments I have done with the system I and others built
for the Digital Immune System. Then, I will conclude with the outlook
of this technology being used as an antivirus and the benefits this might
bring.
