Our Experiences with Viruses
Overview
Happy99! FunLove! Sounds nice, doesn't it? Sort of warm and fuzzy. Things are not what they seem. These are the names of two of the viruses that we encountered at Help Desk Services at the beginning of the school year. We also had some experiences with QaZ, and W32.Kak.Worm. I’ve chosen to discuss these four viruses not because they’re the latest, hottest viruses, but for the opposite reason. These viruses are known, and have been around for a while. Up-to-date virus protection software, set up correctly, should detect them and prevent us from being infected.
Nevertheless, we get infected. The reasons this still happens depend on the virus. In the case of two of these viruses, Happy 99 and Kak.Worm, infection occurred via email. We saw them on machines that were brought in to us for repair. The other two infected us directly through network connections, and remain a threat in our network as long as there are unprotected computers sharing our network space. I will describe below our experiences with these cyber-beasts as we encountered them in the hope that this will help prevent further infections. This article gives a brief description of these several viruses, including what they do, how they spread, how to detect them and how to get rid of them.
