Network Attached Storage (NAS) Security Issues and Exposures
Overview
The popularity of NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices has increased dramatically as more companies offer storage devices that are attached directly to the network. Although advertised as purely storage devices, they all incorporate an integrated file server to provide data organization and to present a standard access method to users. As with any file server, there are security issues related to controlling access and protecting the data, either in the storage device or in transit between the user's system and the storage device.
This paper discusses various security issues related to the design and implementation choices of NAS devices and how security issues are different than with general purpose servers. It also includes guidelines for determining the security risks of different NAS approaches and a list of questions to consider when selecting a NAS solution.
