Direct Digital Technology: an Application Guide to the Digital Interface Standards for PC Displays
Overview Most personal computers today start with digital video, convert it to an analog video, and then feed the signal to an analog monitor. Although a computer creates video in a digital form, the CRT monitors are analog, making the digital to analog (D/A) conversion necessary. More recently, with the advent and growing popularity of digital displays (such as LCD and plasma displays), it made sense to develop a direct digital (pure digital) standard. Various manufacturers and groups have developed direct digital standards. Of these, the standard that has emerged as the most popular is the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard. The DVI standard provides several advantages over analog video, including improved image quality, lower cost (through the elimination of A/D and D/A conversion stages) and easier setup.
