Extending Data Security to Mobile Devices
Overview
The popularit of personal digital assistants (PDAs)is soaring.The range of
uses for PDAs is expanding as more applications become available.Few users
realize that information stored on a PDA is open to compromise.They are
unaware of PDA vulnerabilities,and are lulled into a false sense of securit
by the presence of “built-in ”security applications,which,in fact,do not pro-
vide strong data security.
This paper discusses the weak points of the Palm OS® Security application, and of some alternative security applications currently on the market. In this context, Certicom’s movianCrypt™ is presented.The algorithm (the Advanced Encryption Standard)and encryption method (Cipher Feedback Mode)are outlined,and various features of the product are discussed.
