Overview Electronic markets are by no means a new phenomenon Instinet, one of the early electronic platforms for stock trading, began operations in 1969 and still trades today. In the late 1970s, EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) emerged as the first organized system for electronic business-to-business commerce, allowing trading partners to use the blossoming telecommunications networks to exchange business documentation and data.
