Essential Environment Protection: Backup Agent for Open Files for Windows NT/2000 and NetWare

Overview Backup and Archiving are two of the more important tasks of System Management. While fault tolerance and redundancy improve system reliability, they do not provide complete data recovery — the means to restore data that has been deleted, overwritten or corrupted.

This is an important, but often unappreciated, distinction. Even replicated file servers equipped with duplexed RAID drives cannot recover an accidentally overwritten file any more than a basic machine with a single hard disk can.
