Video Codecs for the Personal Video Recorder (PVR)

Overview The Personal Video Recorder (PVR) allows a user to store 32 hours of analog television programming in digital format (assuming a compression of 4 Mbps and 60-Gbyte hard-drive). The PVR extends the features and advantages of the VHS videocassette recorder in virtue of the fact that it stores and processes digital information.

With a PVR, it is possible to record two programs simultaneously; a live show can be paused (the recording continues while the user has the option of pausing, rewinding, or jumping to the live broadcast); rewind and fast forward happen instantaneously as the information is accessed digitally; any scene can be bookmarked for future easier access.
