Computers: the British Answer to the German Enigma Machines

Overview This paper shows that the encryption capabilities of the Third Reich’s Enigma machine prompted British cryptanalysts to develop the world’s first programmable computer, called Colossus. Using code-breaking databases developed during WWI, Colossus cracked Enigma — and foiled Hitler on D-Day.
