Next-Generation Backbone Network Metrics

Overview Since the advent of DWDM, transmission technologies have been benchmarked using a number of technical and economic metrics. The industry traditionally balanced reach, number of wavelengths and bit-rate to provide best cost per DS3-mile or cost per gigabit-mile for a point-to-point system at full capacity and maximum reach. These point-to-point metrics do not effectively capture the value of next-generation photonic networks that cater directly to the connection requirements of the underlying services.
With the advances in photonic networking, it is now possible to network across backbone locations without OEO conversions resulting in significant capital, space, power and workforce savings. The ability to network a wavelength in a manner similar to a DS3, obsoletes existing technical and economic metrics due to their lack of consideration of photonic networking capabilities. This paper discusses the flaws with today’s metrics and proposes the need to establish new network performance measures.
