TwinStor Technology: A Compelling Case for Multiple Drives in PCs, Servers and Workstations
Overview Most desktop and small servers today have a single disk drive, and the data on this disk is often protected by erratic or expensive backup procedures. With the cost of storage undergoing a rapid decline, it is now time to consider the use of multiple inexpensive drives per PC. This paper presents a new TwinStor architecture for making effective use of a second drive to simultaneously improve fault tolerance and performance. The TwinStor architecture mirrors data on two drives, but accesses data with new adaptive algorithms to provide the sequential read bandwidth approaching that of striped (RAID 0) drives and the random transaction rate exceeding that of either striping or mirroring (RAID 1) solutions. A TwinStor-enabled controller plus a pair of low-cost ATA drives provides greatly improved performance and fault tolerance over a single-drive configuration. The technology can benefit a wide range of applications in home, small office and server environments.
