E-Learning Shootout at ASTD 2001 Conference

Overview The profile of the participants in the KnowledgeNet e-learning challenge constituted training directors and managers from several countries around the world. They came from corporate backgrounds and government institutions, as well as universities and colleges. The overwhelming majority had not had an opportunity to compare different vendors’ e-learning products side by side, and viewed the e-learning challenge as a rare opportunity to do so.
Each was exposed to a self-paced Microsoft Office course and asked to rank their experience based on factual criteria. Most had not yet seen KnowledgeNet, yet by the end of the session, KnowledgeNet outpaced both SmartForce and DigitalThink in every category: interactivity, multimedia, content, and simulations. It became apparent from the product comparisons that most users have not taken the time or been afforded the opportunity to actually sample different types of e-learning. When they are finally introduced to the differences between e-learning 1.0 and next generation e-learning, however, they prefer the latter because of its demonstrated superiority in interactivity, simulations, multimedia, and content.
This paper explains the methodology used for the survey, provides an analysis of the data collected from the surveys, and a definition of “next generation ” e--learning.
