Supply chain collaboration is complementary to existing systems as it adds functionality to internal systems, of whatever sort. It is also complementary to EDI, as it adds unstructured collaborative data to structured transactional data.

Supply chain collaboration allows companies to introduce totally new ways of working. Supply chain collaboration is the enabler for more dynamic trading where companies make to order rather than make to stock and satisfy their customers through customised responses versus mass-produced goods. META Group, however, states it much better than we can: "The experience curve is critical; early collaboration adopters will develop a sustainable competitive advantage."
