An API for Linux QoS Support
Overview
The Quality of Service (QoS) concerns to the performance parameters that are of concern to the user. Since other technologies like Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) provide an end-to-end QoS, the need for such a service in Internet Protocol (IP) was appreciated. IP, being a connectionless protocol, has no inherent traffic contract concepts. Various approaches were suggested for providing QoS in IP, such as TOS routing, Integrated services and Differentiated services.
IP QoS refers to the performance of IP packet flow through networks. Its purpose is to deliver end-to-end QoS to the user traffic. It is characterized by metrics like service availability, delay, delay variation, throughput and packet loss. QoS requirements are application specific, for eg. voice traffic has stringent QoS requirements compared to normal data traffic. Each traffic has to be treated differently. Hence, the concept of different queuing disciplines like Class Based Queues (CBQ), Token Bucket Flow (TBF), Priority etc. were introduced.
