Surround Mixing History and Techniques: An Introduction

Overview First there was mono. Then there was stereo. Now there is surround sound.

If you haven't yet experienced it, you're in for a treat. By selectively placing audio signal in multiple speakers positioned in a circle around you (plus a subwoofer to handle deep bass tones), you feel as if you're immersed in the sound; it's almost like being onstage instead of in the audience. The contrast between stereo and surround is kind of like the difference between staring at a two-dimensional painting on the wall and actually being inside the painting. It's so striking that most people never want to go back to stereo after they've experienced it, which kind of makes sense when you consider that we actually live our entire lives hearing the environment around us in surround and not from a flat plane in front of us (close your eyes and listen: you can easily discern sounds originating from behind you or off to the sides).
