In the race to be first to market with services such as voice over IP (VoIP), virtual private networks (VPNs), interactive video and high speed Internet access, service providers are building larger, increasingly complex networks that encompass a mix of technologies, often from a variety of vendors. Many — particularly competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) — are choosing broadband wireless technology to bypass the local loop and deliver these services to more customers in new locations at less cost than installing new fiber and/or copper.
