Building Scalable Service Provider IP Networks: Connection-Oriented Networking Solutions
Overview In many large IP networks, service providers have deployed connection-oriented ATM network cores to optimize bandwidth utilization and increase IP service predictability via ATM traffic engineering and infrastructure resilience. Though this has worked well, and indeed has enabled the current explosive growth of the Internet, there is a desire to simplify network operations by reducing the number of control planes operating in the network (currently ATM and IP). One emerging technology, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), has been widely identified as a new tool to help service providers meet the often-conflicting challenges of increased predictability, growth in revenue, and cost reduction. As will be discussed in this white paper, it is MPLS’s connection-oriented nature that provides an ability to increase IP service predictability, create differentiated IP services, and potentially reduce operation costs in IP-centric and multi-service networks.
