Using Internet Filtering: to Increase the Effectiveness of Microsoft's Internet Security & Acceleration Server

Overview Internet connectivity continues to be an increasingly important resource for organizations of all sizes. Unfortunately, non-essential Internet activity can bog down an organization’s network, draining precious bandwidth resources while exposing the organization to potential legal liability and lost productivity. Recent findings indicate that 30 to 40 percent of employee Internet use is unrelated to work. In a recent survey, 25 percent of office workers admitted to browsing non-work-related Web sites for more than an hour per day.

Clearly, there is a need to manage and optimize this valuable and potentially costly resource. While a solution like Microsoft’s Internet Security & Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 helps speed-up an organization’s delivery of Web content to end-users, its efficiency is improved dramatically with the integration of an effective and reliable Internet filtering solution.

N2H2 Internet Filtering helps organizations eliminate non-essential Internet traffic. This not only improves network efficiency, but it also alleviates the considerable burden placed on ISA’s cache by non-work related content. In short, Internet filtering truly extends ISA’s capabilities by maximizing the organization’s investment without denying mission-critical resources.

This document explains how N2H2 and ISA provide secure and accelerated Internet access while enabling organizations to manage and control the content that is delivered to end-users. The unique and tightly integrated relationship between Microsoft’s ISA Server and N2H2’s Internet filtering plug-in is the main factor contributing to this solution’s ease of use and flexibility. Both large and small deployments are covered, with a detailed view of components and architecture.
