A Storage Area Network (SAN) is an environment where multiple host servers have access to a network of storage devices. The SAN is a separate network from the Local Area Network (LAN)
that consists only of storage devices. The SAN environment enables storage to be externalized from servers, allowing servers to share storage without impacting system performance on the
primary communication network.
