Designing the Optical Internet of Greece

Overview The Greek Academic network specified its Optical all-IP successor GRNET2. Various technical and political decisions are presented here from a critical point of view and a proposal has been made to design an all optical DWDM nationwide core network interconnecting IP optical MANs in the three major cities and new GigE access for most of the large customers.

This paper also summarizes the expected new services and the policy based management methods, which are planed to be deployed (QoS differentiation and guarantees, MPLS, diffserv, DEN) in order to maximize the influence of this modern high-speed infrastructure to the Greek academic community at large. GRNET2 is currently under design and the final deployment is planned within 2001.
