From Packets to Profit: Revenue Assurance in the IP World

Overview Internet Protocol-based services have the potential to become a crucial component of many telecom companies' revenue. Executives must therefore understand how this technology affects one of their company's most important functions: billing. As margins for traditional services like long-distance telephony diminish, offering lower cost IP-based services represents a logical step for communications service providers. As a result, a great deal of attention has been devoted to next-generation services, such as videoconferencing and virtual private networks. However, less consideration is given to the challenges and opportunities implicit in collecting revenue generated by these new offerings. There are a small but growing number of companies offering IP-based business support systems ready for deployment at carrier-grade quality. Although the procedures for these systems do not differ greatly from traditional mediation and billing processes (terms like data gathering, mediation, rating and invoicing are all familiar to veteran telecom operators) in practice these systems propel business support systems on an entirely new approach to account management.
