Protecting the "Achilles Heel" of a Telecommunications Network

Overview For almost anyone whose company uses networks in daily business operations, their computer really no longer resides in one box on their desk. Most likely that computer is connected to a network which is connected to other computers through modems, routers, hubs, gateways and switches. In this distributed computing environment, be it a client/server, peer to peer, or other network topology, the network and all the devices attached to it--the adapters, bridges, routers and hubs; all the modems and mail servers; and all the workstations, desktop computers, and factory controllers become one large virtual mainframe. Just as you would protect your stand-alone mainframe from potential memory loss and data corruption with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup system, you need to protect all the electrically active devices on your network--on your virtual mainframe computer. Otherwise, each of these devices can become an Achilles heel in a network system--the most vulnerable point for power problems and potential total system shutdown.
