Web Protocols White Papers

Which Protocols for Secure E-mail and Secure E-Business?

Overview There are an increasing number of secure e-mail solutions being offered each with its range of feature and benefit claims. As well as user e-mail, messaging can be used as infrastructure of e-commerce solutions, or m-commerce. Some applications, such as electronic bill presentment, can use either a Web or m-commerce approach. This paper looks at the security implications of this choice. Almost all secure e-mail solutions talk about 'open protocols' and 'Internet Standards'. They can do this legitimately, as they make use of some protocols in this class. These open protocols are often mixed with use of proprietary protocols for key functions. Products typically do not promote their use of proprietary protocols, and so it is often quite difficult for the non-expert to identify which class a product comes under.
