How to Provide Secure Electronic Statement Delivery
Overview Email is the most pervasive Internet service, and many millions of users exchange e-mail every day. An ever-increasing number of businesses are treating e-mail as business-critical, using it for a wide range of services. Most of this e-mail is exchanged without security features. There are a number of options to enable the deployment of a managed secure messaging system, which are designed specifically for corporate implementation and use. Secure corporate messaging solutions may be purchased from a number of major vendors. They most commonly use S/MIME, although a number of organizations are using PGP, which is a viable alternative. The reason for S/MIME being the most usual choice is that the enterprise can exercise a high degree of control and management using an X.509 based PKI (Public Key Infrastructure), and then roll out managed secure clients to users in the organization. The X.509 users will then (transparently) obtain secure messaging for use within the organization. The X.509 PKI provides strong management facilities that are useful for S/MIME and for other enterprise security functions, such as single sign-on.
