Echocardiographic Examination During Parabolic Flights
Overview Ultrasound examinations have been used during space missions since 1982. At that time, they were tested for the first time aboard "Salyut-7" orbital space station (1). These studies were conducted during both short- and long-duration orbital missions (2). However, important questions are still unanswered regarding acute blood redistribution resulting from the transition between normogravity and weightlessness and back again. This data is very important for applied and space physiology (extreme environments of microgravity, high performance airplanes, aviation acrobatics) and for cardiovascular physiology because such gravity variations represent a model of acute variations in venous return.
