Real-time Collaboration on the World Wide Web: Supporting Virtual Teams Across Space and Time
Overview To be competitive, organizations constantly need to bring together the right mixes of people who, together, have the appropriate set of knowledge, skills, information, and authority to solve problems quickly and easily. Traditionally, organizations have used "task forces," which are temporary work groups with a finite task and life cycle, to solve problems which cannot be solved well by existing work groups. Unfortunately, traditional task forces, like traditional organizational structures, have been proven to be ineffective in solving problems quickly. Organizations need flexible teams that can be assembled quickly and can solve problems effectively and efficiently. Time is of the essence. Membership on these "virtual teams" is fluid, with teams forming and disbanding as needed, with team size fluctuating as necessary, and with team members coming and going as they are needed. Computer-based collaboration tools (e.g., Group Support Systems) can help to support these kinds of teams, but most of these tools are optimized and packaged for same time, same place group member use. To be truly useful for a virtual team, these tools must be suited for distributed group member use. The tools must be easy to use when team members are remote, almost to the point of being "facilitator-less," and they must be easily accessible by team members at any time and from any place. In fact, most times the members of the virtual team will not use the tools from their offices but from remote, ever changing locations, most likely via a notebook PC and a modem.
