Flexibility: The Evolution of Employee Internet Management

Overview As employees work longer hours, the Internet offers a convenient way to accomplish personal tasks during the workday. While workers value employers placing limits on personal Web use, they also appreciate the flexibility to access appropriate sites for reasonable amounts of time. Flexible Internet management — achieved through fair Internet access policies and balanced filtering solutions — enables companies to manage professional vs. personal employee Web use. Hailed as a productivity tool, the Internet has become indispensable to job function and performance, enabling quicker research and communication. American companies alone invested $89 billion on Internet strategies in 1999, and spending is projected to increase to $120 billion in 2000. With companies using large amounts of capital building Internet infrastructures and providing employees with Web access, this investment must be effectively managed. However, organizations have struggled between offering workers unlimited Internet access and completely blocking non-work-related Web sites, trying to avoid both employee backlash and rampant Internet misuse.
