Under the Table Work - the Hidden Productivity Drain

Overview Virtually all IT organizations suffer from it. It is a prime cause of customer dissatisfaction in new outsourcing arrangements. It robs resources from more important assignments. Like any addiction, it gets harder to correct the longer it is tolerated. The culprit is "under the table work." What is "under the table work?" It is those work assignments that bypass normal channels, going directly from the requestor to the implementor. For example, Marie in accounting calls her friend Joe in IT to ask him to make a few "minor changes" the next time he is working on the accounting system. Or Harry finds it easier to call Joe with questions than to look in the user manual.
