Overview The call for a new multilateral trade round and the further globalisation of trade and investment has been deflected by a range of regional and bilateral initiatives and by the economic difficulties. So far these pressures generally have not led to a protectionist reaction in the trade area. Emphasis should continue to be made of the need for countries to maintain an open trading policy, despite the extreme short-term pressures that might result.
