Packet over SONET for the Metro

Overview Packet over SONET (PoS) is a technology that maps IP data directly on top of a SONET layer. PoS takes advantage of the robustness of SONET/SDH infrastructure while maximizing packet transport efficiency. PoS technology is commonly used by ISPs in their long haul backbone network to support high availability.

While PoS interface speeds are increasing, the underlying PoS technology has not changed. This technology paper highlights two areas where PoS is vital to Service Providers in the Metro Area.

• Bridging, a value-added feature in Riverstone Networks PoS implementation

• Network availability with PoS
