Field Trials and Experiments in Europe for Future Multimedia Mobile Satellite Services

Overview Some important field trials are being performed in Europe to demonstrate satellite multimedia mobile services. Strong efforts are being done since when, in the first half of 90s, it has been recognized that the satellite can play a key role in providing ubiquitous services, extending the coverage of terrestrial networks (both fixed and mobile) well beyond their economic breakeven points. The satellite key role has been identified both at L/S band frequencies, and at higher frequencies (Ka band and EHF). At L/S band, satellite networks are experiencing an unprecedented growth, especially through the new low earth orbit (LEO) constellation technologies, for personal voice and low-rate data services. At Ka band, and even beyond at extremely high frequencies (EHF), in addition to LEOs, also the "classical" GEO technologies are developing very fast, to economically provide the broadest range of interactive multimedia services (Internet web browsing, teleconference, high speed data, etc.) directly to the user.
