System-Level Simulation for Land Mobile Satellite Services
Overview Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) communication systems are now coming on line and will enable users of handheld wireless phones or portable computers to communicate with one another from any two points worldwide, thanks to constellations of low earth orbit satellites. Signal propagation for such systems has become for the last years an essential consideration, especially regarding high-rate services. Path conditions may indeed cause harmful impairments that severely degrade the system availability and performance. In LMS typical built-up scenarios, the line-of-sight path between the satellite and the mobile terminal can be affected by multipath mechanisms arising from reflection on ground and wall surfaces, diffraction by building wedges and corners, and scattering from trees and obstacles.
