DSL & Broadband Access Networks: Is Competition Bad for Competition?
Overview Everybody wants DSL: governments see broadband access as the one key enabler of the e-business economy, competing telecom operators as the way to tap the under-served and potentially huge SME market, ISPs as the way out of the "free-for-all" internet into a new phase of customer retention and revenue creation, consumers as the promised land of always-on broadband communications and Internet access. It seems that every interested party in the telecoms industry and beyond expects a lot from DSL. After all, this is the only broadband access technology that is well developed and that does not require extensive infrastructure investment because it can be deployed over the existing copper lines.
